1914-1928 with many still in operation in 1956. The other existing K-4S

SOUTHERN PACIFIC 4-8-8-2 CAB FORWARD
Unique among steam engines. The "Cab Forward" design was brought about
when the size of steam
power grew to the point of almost choking the train crew to death in the
high sierra snow sheds. Although
born of necessity, they were beautiful engines reaching their ultimate
high point with the AC 7-12 series.
